Welcome to listen to a talk between Mary James Gill, a Pakistani human rights layer and WaterAid Sweden Chief Executive Anna Nilsdotter.

Mary James Gill is a politician, lawyer, and human rights activist. In 2020, she was awarded with the Anna Lindh prize, for her work to raise awareness on the horrific attitudes and working conditions of sanitation workers in Pakistan, a rarely noticed group but with important roles. She is currently the Executive Director of the Center for Law & Justice, a research-based policy and advocacy organisation in Pakistan.

Sanitation workers – including pit emptiers, sewer cleaners, and others involved in faecal waste management – provide an invaluable public service, vital to our daily lives and the environment. But this is often at the cost of their dignity, safety, health and living conditions. Often invisible and facing social stigma, sanitation workers are exposed to serious health and safety hazards.

Welcome to join this talk about how we can safeguard sanitation worker’s human rights and make sure they get the recognition and attention they deserve.
