Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport v Nissan Patrol Ti-L 2021 Review @carsales

The new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series has finally landed in Australia – at least for press and dealer demo duties – and it bears a beefier ladder frame, downsized 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 and wholesale safety and technology upgrades.

But while Toyota’s new off-road king ushers in vast improvements to performance and refinement while staying true to its off-road roots, it also brings huge price hikes.

Which brings us to its only real competitor, the Y62 Nissan Patrol, which comes armed with a glorious 5.6-litre naturally-aspirated petrol V8 and even in top-spec Ti-L form costs $43,000 less than the LandCruiser GR Sport in this comparison.

Join Sam Charlwood to find out which is the better buy and the better towing proposition.

The new LC especially was going to better without doubt and it bloody should be. But with around $45k to play with on the Patrol, a small super charger, engine chip tune, better wheel and tyre combo, nice off bullbar, 2" lift, good set of driving lights and you would still have around $25k to spend on free fuel and that's a lot of motoring.

Bought a new Y62 a year ago. Hasn’t missed a beat. People calling them rubbish have no idea and need some way to justify the ridiculous amount they spent on a Toyota. Swapped exhaust so it sounds amazing. Springs in rear and tows a big van with ease. Fits a 34” tyre with no mods needed. Driven a 300 twice now as it’s the newer car and was seriously considering changing over, just cannot see where they get the extra $$ from. Yes interior better but not $40k better.

I like how you just gloss over the $40k+ price difference. For all the "1%" differences between the Patrol and Cruiser, you're happy with a 40% price difference ...

Gee, who would have thought a brand new car would win against a 10 year old car.

ridiculous review, it is almost an advertisement for Toyota, this is how reviewers lose credibility.

Still get the patrol, 40 g off fuel will go a long way plus the v8 note you can’t beat it

300 can never beat the space of Y62. My kids sleep with stretched legs in the Patrol. Something I can never imagine with the LC.

Actually the GR works out to about $150k at the dealer with on roads. It’s insanely expensive.

As someone who works on Toyota's day in day out, and only Toyota 4x4's, I will still buy the y62. Why? Because it's a proven platform, it doesn't break components just doing basic 4x4 work, and they drive better for longer.

It's more like a $55k difference... the LC300 gets a heap more LCT etc and the Nissan can be discounted if you wait the same timeframe. ( have quotes with a $60K difference) That's just ridiculous. Harrop, new digital dash and centre console and $35K to play with !!

I really appreciate the 300 and its tech but the price tag is just mind blowing its supercar territory and I feel it needs more

Structural rigidity? Lol

Cut a y62 chassis open and you'll quickly find out that its extremely over engineered and ridiculously strong.

Be nice if Australia got the updated interior for the patrol, be a more fair comparison

Waited for the 300 before we decided on a new family car. Just ordered a patrol 👍

Also, is this just a Toyota add??

Buy the patrol and use the left over money on fuel, renting 3.5t caravan and family road trips.

If you do the maths at displayed fuel economics it will take the patrol over 450, 000km to price match the new lc🤣

I’d suggest comparing models based on price….Although you can’t get a LC300 for the price of a Ti Patrol.
Maybe Ti up against the GX.

Wow!!! A Toyota add if I have ever seen one. Never drove an LC300 but have the Y62 5th Gen and I can tell you the Y62 is a dam good car and if you drive it normally it gets less the 12ltr per 100k and at 45k less you would be well in front with the Y62 and petrol is cheaper now days and much less maintenance. There is no cost crossover point the Y62 wins by a country mile all day long

Stupid people waste money on cars that have some tech over their competitors to which we all know is just not going to last at all.
Patrol for me all day long.
Old is better and reliable

Apparently Nissan have started work on the Y63, think I'll wait for that, also 8.9L on a large 4x4 is BS, maybe down hill with the wind behind ya, most dual cabs with real world results don't do much better than that, set of 31in tyres on my wife's dmax does 10 per 100 on the highway
