WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS:
It all started with an episode of Song Exploder on Netflix. I became curious about the cognitive effects of music and went down the rabbit hole of investigation and experimentation. In this video, I unpack some of the science happening here, and share the main tactics I use around music to help me focus, including why I listen to the same song on repeat for hours on end!

Many years ago, I wrote my master’s thesis listening to the Jackson 5 on repeat—I had no idea why nor any notion that it was helping me focus. But I do remember that I was in this kind of dreamy state and the whole world went away. I worked like that for hours and i look back at that as one the most satisfying creative moments. Now I know why and how to get it back. 😊

Nope, you're not crazy. Music, and "early years" music has the capacity to make me happy, creative and calm all at once. I listen to most of my music on vinyl, so rather than play a song over and over it's a full album for me. The progression of the music gives me a pleasurable anticipation of what is to come, and with some albums the band very carefully create a mood by how they organized the tracks. I grew up with siblings who came home with new record albums regularly and I associate joy and discovery with even sliding a record out of the cover, and the warm memory of which sibling turned me onto it. Music is my long lasting steadfast road to happiness, old and new music both. Thank you for posting this, I will experiment and see if I can change my rem sleep. meanwhile, rock on...

I feel like I have a huge flood of dopamine from most songs from Led Zeppelin. Almost each and every time in listen. The band is mix into my daily play list. My mood changes, usually for usually for the better.

Don't know if childhood music would enhance my creativity, but THANKS, cause I'm gonna try. A music on repeat does help me get into flow indeed, but many different ones (especially filled with childhood memories) have caused me the exact opposite, for the mind to wander off that is.
Nice to have discovered you Katie, love your energy, gimme some ;)

I will try this, I currently just listen to a group of my favorites, mostly from when I was a teenager in the 1970s. Now I know why. I work with magnetism, high frequency applications. I had a theory that music is a series of controlled varying resonant frequencies that couple with our neurons. This can make us laugh, cry, remember events, and make our motor nervous system become semi autonomic making us able to dance, some better than others, me being the other except when I am in my kitchen.

I can't be productive creatively unless I'm listening to music! I knew it was because no music makes me distracted with other sounds, but the extra info you gave just blew me away!

That’s pretty interesting. I used to listen to songs on repeat when I was younger. Now while working I need more ambient/classical music so I can focus. I adore lyrics, so anything with words distracts me too much, lol. I also like listening to sleep ambient music while reading before bed.
