A few things on The Clash. The group had two primary leaders, who had very different styles. The often shared singing/songwriting duties. This song is a Joe Strummer song, and shows his more gritty, revolutionary style. The other singer, Mick Jones, sung and wrote "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" has much more pop sensibilities. The tension between them is what made the Clash such a diverse band. You can listen to the entire London Calling album, which is a double album, and every song is so different from the others. They must hit 10 different genres on that one album alone. The early Clash records are squarely in the punk wheelhouse, but London Calling blew it wide open. The album transcends genre.

England was struggling in the 1970s and this song was history being spoken/sung

London Calling is one of those very rare damn near perfect albums, and an ever bigger feat is that it's a double album.

A drummer friend of mine once told me ‘if you want to know the basics of punk, The Ramones invented it, The Sex Pistols popularized it and The Clash perfected it’.

This track has Joe Strummer singing lead, whereas "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" has Mick Jones on lead vocal :) xx

This whole album is so varied and unique. So many styles on the album, reggae, ska, punk, pop, power rock. So great. Pick any song from the album.

"This is London Calling" came from Edward R Murrow during the war on his news broadcasts from England.

The Clash is a socially conscious and politically charged band... That's why their lyrics are so meaningful and alive to this day.. And Joe Strummer (r.i.p) has to be one of the best rock vocalists ever...

She sells sanctuary by the Cult please, assuming you've not heard it...

The one thing that The Clash had was sincerity. Joe Strummer in particular was engaged with the lyrics, not just singing them.

"Straight to Hell" is probably one of the greatest songs ever.

This song has one of the most evocative lines I have ever heard in a song "I was there to, and you what they said, well some of it was true!" Always gives me goosebumps.

This is the UK in the late 70's, Poverty, Unemployment rising, Race relations getting worse, Industrial strikes, We had rubbish (Trash) piled up in the streets, Bodies not buried because of strikes, A Punk culture that scared the hell out of the establishment. The UK in the late 70's was not a nice place to live and The Clash showed that in their music, Like a lot of other Punk and New Wave bands, Hearing these bands in the late 70's as a teenager was really influential.

The entire London Calling album is great -- "Clampdown", "Death or Glory", "Revolution Rock", "Rudie Can't Fail", "Spanish Bombs" etc. etc...

Another great song which covers so many issues of the era is ‘Ghost Town’ by ‘The Specials’. Very reflective of the atmosphere in the UK in late 70’s early 80’s.
