Floriography

Floriography is the language of flowers. Victorians used flowers to send secret messages to sweethearts using different blossoms to mean different messages.

Though using flora to convey messages isn't something new to the 1800s, it became popular during the Victorian era. There were dictionaries published that gave meanings to all the different flowers, even specifying colors at times. Where they were placed in the bouquet, the number of flowers, the color. There were lots of hidden meanings buried in it, and though some flowers had fairly universal meanings, each dictionary attributed their own meanings to the flowers, which could be very confusing if the couple weren't careful. You really didn't want to send her a flower that you thought mean, "I love you," but her dictionary says it means, "I think of you as a friend." Lol.

I'd read about this a while ago and even used it in "A Stolen Kiss." It doesn't play a huge part in the story, but I thought it was a fun bit of history to include.

As a lover of plants & ones that flower this has always been so interesting to me! What fun it would be to create a communication simply with flowers! Just as much for the recipient to look them up for the hidden meanings. ☺️💛
