It is a small nation in both geography and population, yet the achievement of its people, and its sizeable influence far exceeds its modest size. To use a modern expression… the Nation of Wales has always punched “far above its weight” as you will discover on this channel. Learn about a unique part of Welsh history.

This video was excellent. As a Welshman it made me proud and sad at the same time.
Most of the videos on Welsh culture don't mention the attempted destruction by the English or the Welsh Not.
I would love to travel and see all the Welsh in America (I believe there's Welsh inscribed on the Washington monument?)
I have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.

Diolch yn fawr!

Very enjoyable. Thanks. My eldest has just moved to Ohio, from S. Wales The funny thing is, is that he went for some of the same reasons the old folks did.

My mother (as an 8-year-old) came to the USA in 1929 With my grandparents and settled in Youngstown, Ohio. My grandfather worked in a slate quarry in North Wales, and worked in a steel mill in Youngstown. My grandmother attended the Welsh Congregational church there. I've visited North Wales myself, and I have relatives there.

I was brought up in South Wales, Bridgend area through the 1960's and moved to Florida in 1999. (Wife from New Hampshire, I'm still a British Subject)
I remember collieries working away, seeing bucket lifts going up the mountain from classroom windows.
The pits at Garw, Maesteg, etc all closed down years ago
Actually liked the Garw Valley and bought a house there, still have it with my brother living in it
I was slightly involved with local government in mid 1990's, (Mayors Consort, Porthcawl)
Could not believe how 'entitled' the wives of euro MP's felt, 'off to Brussels on a jolly, £50, 000 credit card'
They didn't see anything wrong with the taxpayer footing the bill and it's why I have such an issue with politics, USA probably being much worse as you have much more money floating around. The EU did some good though by supplying funds for the old coal tips to be stabilised and landscaped but I think Britain leaving was 'a good thing'
Watched a few of your video's and subscribed, learning more about William Penn, explains why I felt so 'at home' when driving through Pennsylvania way off the main routes. Dry-stone walls and loose gravel, no road markings, wife was pretty panicked as I automatically started driving 'on the left' but out in 'middle of nowhere' we didn't see any other traffic for at least an hour (in 2004, drove up to NH)
Devolution has only added another layer of semi-corrupt politicians and cost Welsh taxpayers more than they would otherwise be paying, although London Government is pretty stupid and just as corrupt in my opinion, coming up with grandiose idea's that are unworkable and keeping the few in work in a state of semi poverty while there are generations of unemployed on benefits (even in the 1980's there were 3 rd generation benefit families 'working the system')
Instead of fixing problems, just change the definitions.
Cutting benefits would probably lead to anarchy though, particularly when Police Stations are closed down and camera's 'everywhere' make it look more like 1984 (the George Orwell version)
It's difficult to fathom why Scotland want's devolution so much, North sea Oil revenue isn't going to last forever, it's already tapered off with very few Scots actually benefiting to any major extent.
I haven't been back since 2014, it was depressing enough back then with many places I knew closed down or even demolished and grassed over
Enough from me, I never learned to speak Welsh although my nieces all went to 'Welsh school' and were fluent at one time.

You have managed to concentrate a lot of history into 18 minutes or so. There is a lot in this that many Welsh people do not know. Growing up in Wales, and particularly in Cardiff from 1955, I (we) were taught a lot of history that concentrated mainly on the English kings and queens, and never anything about Wales, except for a very short period of the school year leading up to St David´s Day, . After St David's day, that tiny but significant piece of Welsh history was swiftly replaced by English history. I moved to London soon after I left school and from 1971 London was my base for just shy of 20 years. In that time though I lived in various locations on the European continent. All the time I was ignorant of Welsh history. In 1991, a year after I returned from London, I started to learn Welsh. In 1994 I entered university and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Welsh in 1998 on my 43rd birthday. The four years I was at university I immersed myself in the Welsh language, history and literature. I'm still learning. This presentation is a gem and a wonderful introduction to Wales and our history. I have only this evening discovered this channel, and this, the latest addition, is the first I have listened to. I look forward to listening to the rest. Diolch yn fawr iawn. Cyfarchion o Gaerdydd, Cymru. (By the way. My family hail from near to where your forebears traveled to the United States from. We are from an area known as The Cape, i.e., Abergwynfi and Blaengwynfi, which is over the Bwlch Mountain from Treorchy. My great grandfather deserted my great grandmother and took a boat to New York sometime in the 1930s. I believe he only wrote home once from New York. My father's family moved to Treherbert for a short while in the 1940s... Oh, it's a long story. You've inspired me with this brief history!

Llewellyn is a particularly hard pronunciation. You have to get that "Ll" sound, which I don't know how to express in English.

An highly detailed and well put video. A good start, Chwarae Teg! Indeed, Druidism did indeed start in Wales. What are your thoughts on The Welsh having more control over Scotland long into the Middle Ages? Do you suppose there is any truth to it? I find it very strange that the Scoti Tribe never renamed the Place names in Scotland from Welsh to Gaelic. It may suggest that The Britons either Had a stronger role in Scotland for longer, or It makes the Scottish cities with those names older than previously suggested. We know they didn’t create them because after all, why would these Scoti use old Welsh to name their cities. Everything points towards Scotland being founded by a Joint venture of Scoti and Britons, rather than the Scoti alone. And again, Great video! This will hopefully bring more American awareness to Wales, the two nations having many great links.

Best flag in the world and unlike Scotland or Ireland dont have a nasty unionist element and ofc they have a much bigger Welsh speaking population than the Gaelic nations .As a Scot i support my Celtic nations .
