You keep mentioning the Snap-on set as a higher quality alternative and that isn't necessarily true. By machinist standards - folks who cut threads - both sets are poorly made. The SO set is rebranded Irwin. The only benefit to buying it is a warranty on the taps. As SO and GW taps are not HSS, they're HCS, the tooling is more brittle and will dull quicker. It makes sense for an auto tech to buy a tap and die set. OTOH, if one wants to cut threads well, there's a whole 'nother world of applicable tools that are purchased individually as needed.
