Correction, you will NOT live longer on Jupiter than on Earth. You will live longer on Jupiter (RELATIVE) to Earth!!

Suddenly after watching Interstellar, I became very interested in Cosmology

hmm, I was looking for a more indept explanation to the specific mechanics of how gravitation impacts time. Not just the... "yes, time is slower near objects of higher mass" -explanation, Which doesnt really explain why this fact exists.

New Video: Does gravity affect time? Watch Neil deGrasse Tyson explain to Eugene Mirman why time passes differently on Jupiter & Earth in this StarTalk Radio Cosmic Query:

After watching Interstellar, this was the first thing I had to Google. :P

Relativity is a tough thing to get your mind wrapped around indeed.

The important thing missing here is that even if you go and live on Jupiter, you will seem to have lived longer from an observer on Earth. But to you, it will feel the same amount of time. The observer on Earth is just going through time (or observing time) at a faster rate than the person on Jupiter.

Wow! So nice to see everyone search up this video after watching Interstellar just like me.

I teach high school physics, as well as first year university physics, and I must say - StarTalk Radio is a fantastic resource for introducing complex and challenging ideas in ways that students really respond well to. There is a certain celebrity power that Neil deGrasse Tyson has that makes him legitimate for students (sad but true; recognizable people are given much more credit) and it makes it much easier for them to buy into what I have to say. These videos are seriously powerful.

Every single video / article I read states the effects of time due to speed or gravity, but I cannot find an explaination why that relationship exists. Why does time slow or speed up? What does time have to do with speed or gravity?

So, what is the rate of time in the absence of mass (no gravity field)?

CTSmerv

so... the more powerful the gravity, the slower the time?
the weaker the gravity., the faster the time.?

This is not "how", only "that".
Less gravity is faster time. But it is not explained why.

My heart sank when he said "minutes".

The way this conversation was going, I thought he was going to say at the least a few extra years.

How does gravity effect the clock's mechanics~?

Heisenberg's principle does only work because our machines aren't good enough - they need to pull their socks up, and pull their fingers out. People say machines don't have socks and fingers, this is a lazy excuse for lazy machines. I don't upgrade my PC, I pull it's keys out one by one until it gives in and improves it's performance.

question here: So if you are near something super massive with a very large amount of  gravity and time is slowed down significantly, if you were able to have an extraordinary telescope that would allow you to see people and things on Earth would they appear to be moving at faster rate than what someone on Earth would perceive the same actions?

Nothing has ever stumped me quite as bad as trying to get my head around the theory of relativity

I am not a native English speaker, but It seems to me that the way Dr. Tyson speaks is entirely unique .
