Walking around the city of Smolensk in photos, 4K

Показать описание
Smolensk is a city in the west of Russia, the administrative, industrial and cultural center of the Smolensk region.
The relief of the urban area is cut by numerous deep ravines and valleys of rivers and streams flowing into the Dnieper. High hills and capes form the so-called mountains. The height difference reaches 90 meters. It is believed that the city lies "on 7 hills".
The Dnieper River divides the city into two parts, connected by three bridges. The center, the old part of the city, occupies the high, heavily indented left bank of the Dnieper.
Smolensk is one of the oldest cities in Russia (the first mention in the chronicle dates back to 863). In 2023, the city celebrates its 1160th anniversary. The city has the honorary title of "Hero City" (since May 6, 1985). The population of the city (as of 2023) is more than 312,000 people.
The city is located about halfway from Moscow to Minsk. 378 km (by road — 410 km) from Moscow and 331 km from Minsk.
Smolensk has an advantageous geographical position on the way from Moscow to Belarus, the Baltic States, Central and Western European countries.
Smolensk was part of both the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Socialist Soviet Republic of Belarus (1919).
In the history of Russia, Smolensk is known as the "shield city" and the "key city", which for many centuries served as a reliable defense of Moscow, protecting it from the encroachments of a number of European neighbors. Not once has the city been destroyed by invaders. And the ancient fortress walls are remembered by the army of King Sigismund III of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the troops of Napoleon, and the German Fascist troops.
I suggest you take a walk with me and take a look at this interesting city, amazing architecture and historical places through my eyes. Be lenient with me. I do not presume to claim that I went around the whole city and took off all the iconic places of the city. This is an extra reason to visit him again.
Enjoy your viewing.
