Charging hippo bites tourist boat's rear motor in furious chase

Cameras have caught the moment a hippo charged at a tourist boat on the Chobe River, Namibia, and bit its rear motor.

Jackie Boshoff was part of the group that discovered the hippos, when a male suddenly turned, and managed to out-pace the boat, before launching his attack.

“You hear and read about this stuff, never thinking it could happen to you”, she says.

“Everyone on board the boat actually remained very calm, including me. Fortunately nobody panicked.”

It’s thought the male was protecting a calf when the incident took place.

On another safari trip in KwaZula Natal the tour operator kept a huge distance between the hippos and the boat. When a mother hippo surfaced with her baby, the operator backed right away and said that was it for the trip. He was not going to go back for another look because the animals welfare was the operators only concern. Good on them and we were all given binoculars anyway, so no need to get as close as we did in Chobe.

That stunt could have gotten everyone on that boat killed. If it had disabled the motor and they had no way to haul ass that thing would flip the boat and everyone in it would be in the water. Then it comes after them one by one. I can't imagine the horror of dying in such a way. You dont mess around with those things unless you're an elephant.
