Legionella is a type of bacteria that was first discovered after an outbreak in 1976, when 182 American legionnaires contracted a new lethal disease at a convention for the American Legion, which caused them to suffer from a severe kind of pneumonia. 147 of the legionnaires needed hospital treatment, and 29 of them died.
