Throwing out your back is not a medical diagnosis. It's a lay term used to describe when your back is locked up and you can't move. There are a few reasons a back will feel like it's out. Sometimes, its muscles spasms from overexertion. Other times, it could be from muscle guarding due to an actual injury. Injuries could include disc bulges, pinched nerves, or irritated joints.

In this video, I discuss what it usually means when you throw out your back to give you an idea of what might be the best option for treatment.

Ice their back for 15 minutes to reduce swelling. Apply heat to reduce pain. Take spoonfuls of mustard to stopuscle soasms. Be careful when you lift barbells... no matter how strong you are!

My beloved friend did that at age 49 and several days to a week later she got up off the couch, in the night, passed a clot and dropped dead. Her husband found her the next morning. Breaks my heart…her only child was set to graduate from high school in several weeks! I miss my friend so much! People take aspirin if you can’t move around!

What would it be if it happened instantly. I bent over to get a bag of sand and right when I started motioning upward it hit me like BAM. I didn’t even get the bag off of the ground it just locked up and my ears started ringing, and I almost couldn’t make it back into the house.

What are the best exercises when the pain goes through the left leg, knee and shin?Do I lay down and pull up my leg up? Thankfully I can move my toes and feet.
This is extremely painful especially the nerve pains. In fact, I'd rather go through labour twice. I can actually not stand straight because of the pain and freaked out that I didn't stand straight, but am told that that (my spine) will change once the pain subsides and I will be able to see it straightened again.

Can this happen due to stress? I learned that a family member passed away 12/23. I worked a double that night, but did nothing strenuous. @ midway through the night, I couldn’t straighten up my back.

Every move I make is painful. I just woke up like this one morning. I can’t lay down or sit in any position with sharp grabbing pains shoot thru my lower back

What does it mean if your back doesn't "Lock up"? Still able to move the back, just sharp pains whenever I try to lean forward or get up.

When my back "goes out" I cannot stand up because of the spasms. On a few occasions I have manipulated my back where I felt a pop. I stood up and the pain was absolutely gone. The only way that could happen is if something moved back into position.

I saw this now that I'm in my mid forties, and developed back pain due to my previous job. Often when I bend down to pick something up, I pop something in my back and I get some pretty nasty pain that would last a week. Kinda felt like I popped a part of my spine out of place. It happens a few times a year.
