Saw a lot of people asking how this works so just putting it down here. In armageddon, black will have less time than white but black only needs to draw to win the round while white needs to actually win. There is also no time increment for either side. So in this tournament, the players get to place a bid for the amount of time they will get with black. The player with the lower bid gets to play black.
Hikaru thought Magnus would bid 9 mins so he bid 8 mins 59 secs. But Magnus saw through this and bid 8 mins 58 secs, 1 second less. So Magnus has to draw or win with black and has 8:58 on the clock while Hikaru has to win as white with the regular 15 mins
