Lillian Russell, born Helen Louise Leonard on December 4, 1860, in Clinton, Iowa, was an American actress and singer. One of the most famous figures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she was renowned for her beauty, style, voice, and stage presence. When Alexander Graham Bell introduced the long-distance telephone system on May 8, 1890, Russell's voice was the first to cross the line: from New York City, she sang "Sabre Song" to audiences in Boston and Washington.
