Couplings are used to connect two shafts together in order to transmit power from driving side to the driven side while absorbing the mounting error (misalignment) etc. of two shafts.

There are two main types of couplings which are
(i) rigid couplings
(ii) flexible couplings.

Rigid couplings are used for shafts having no misalignment while flexible couplings can manage misalignment upto some extent.
Types of rigid couplings are flanged, split, & compression.
