This doesn't tell the whole story correctly. The way you tell it makes it sound as if Duvall had been greedy. It was the other way around. Studio offered EVERY major character big bucks to return for Part III (in fact, most of the actors later admitted that money was their ONLY motivation to do Part III) but they only offered Duvall peanuts (compared to others). So, Duvall said, 'Nope. Pay me fairly as you are paying the others or I'm not coming back.' He was 100% correct to refuse being treated like a second-class actor and this way he also exposed the producers as huge pieces of excrement.

Sinatra playing Altabello would have been a serious distraction to the story. Eli Wallach was also a distraction. I had a hard time believing that Wallach was Italian. But, I guess the Jewish diaspora could and does extend through Sicily..

Robert Duvall was lucky to have been written out of The Godfather, Part III, also known as, The Godfather, Part Crap. It was a pile of skyscraper-high dung, and it RUINED what could have been the greatest triad in cinematic history.

Godfather III gets a lot of hate, but the Coda version is great. Pacino was solid and I actually really like Andy Garcia as Sonny's lost son. The only weak links are Sofia Coppola (good director, but terrible actress back then), and the Catholic Church plotline. The end scene on the stairs is so good, such raw emotion out of Pacino, Talia Shire and that great look of disappointment from Andy Garcia. It's no Godfather 1 or II, but I still enjoy it.

Funnily, I just saw a clip of an interview with Robert Duvall. He was talking about this. He said everyone came back for the money. Basically, he said they were trying to do a money grab. The success of the first two made you want more. They waited over a decade to make the 3rd movie. He flat out said Pacino made 5× the money for the 3rd movie. It was the only reason anyone came back. I can't believe it was nominated. It was hot garbage.

I will never forget my brother (20 yrs older)had a meeting in NYC and invited me(i was about 12) to go with and we stayed in a hotel somewhere near broadway and he wanted to go see the godfather that had just come out but when we got there the line was around the block so instead we went to see Nicolas and Alexandria which was about the Russian revolution. I eventually saw the godfather but was curious about all the interest in a dysfunctional family when we already had one at home lol
