Fishing on the Susquehanna River for Smallmouth Bass! Cold Water Smallmouth Fishing in the Snow!

Hit up Joe's Website

In this video I head over to the Susquehanna River and head out looking for my first smallmouth bass of the year. It didn't take too long to catch my first smallmouth. I went out in a jetboat operated by Joe Raymond who owns Susquehanna Smallmouth Guides. This isn't the first time I have fished with Joe and so I knew going into it that we were going to get on some big Susquehanna River Smallmouth Bass! Even though it was early Spring the Harrisburg, PA region just got hit with a blizzard the day before. With fresh snow on the ground the scene of the Susquehanna River was amazing. We were the first to launch and had to get through some deep snow and the weather although a bit cold was certainly fishable. We had air temperatures in the high 30's to low 40's and the water temp was from 36-42 degrees depending on what part of the Susquehanna we were fishing. The smallmouth certainly did bite and we used a number of baits such as the Zman soft plastics, tubes, and silver buddy type blade baits. Some of the fish were still in the deeper wintering holes but a few fish were caught in 2 feet of water or less. Very fun day chasing these smallmouth around in a jet boat and we had a great time.

We also had a special guest come along with us for the first couple of hours Alex who is a rep for St Croix Rods came out and explained to us a bit more about the rods and the different purposes for each one. Joe just started using St Croix this year and of course you all know that a lot of my spinning rods are all St Croix Rods as well.

Travis Manson's Guided Bass Fishing Trips

__________________________________________________________________

Who is SmallmouthCrush?

Travis Manson was born and raised where the giant Smallmouth Bass of the north live...WISCONSIN. He started fishing from the bank at a young age and spent most of his childhood with a rod in his hand. Travis is primarily a self-taught angler that is always learning and experiencing this amazing sport of fishing. He started out fishing for walleyes and fishing in local walleye tournaments, but then in his mid 20's, he caught the BASS BUG and has been hooked every since. He competed at the highest level in bass fishing on the Bassmaster Elite Series for a number of year until he ran out of $$ money $$. This led to a move across the country to the Northeast where he got things right again and is back on track, but now on his own terms. Perhaps he will make another run at the Elite Series if the opportunity allows. In the meantime, he is a fishing guide offering trips on the Chesapeake Bay for largemouth bass(year round), guided trips for smallmouth back in Wisconsin (during select times) and trophy smallmouth bass guided trips in Upstate New York (May-November) His Youtube Channel is named after his passion for the smallmouth bass and will be used as a platform for "how-to" videos, on the water instruction, crazy on and off the water topics and vlogs on the day in the life of a fishing addict! Hope you enjoy!

Hey Crush what’s the earliest you start fishing the Upper Chesapeake and what’s the best way to get info on a guide trip with you. Thanks Bud

I'm from the Hazleton area and have fished the Susky a number of times. The smallies really fight. They are always in that current. You never know what you'll catch...ha ha

My go-to for the Susquehanna River is the REBEL Wee-Craw in the Stream color. I've been fishing there for 30+ yrs and they have been by far my top producer.

get an external recorder like a zoom h1, and put a lapel mic into it a keep it on your person, and sync the audio in post. or if you dont want to have to sync the audio and you want it in camera. Then I would go with a rode videomicro, they seem to work pretty well with a gopro, plus you don't have you remember to turn the mic on, it runs off the cameras power, so it might cost you a little battery time. That's just my two cents. I hope it works out for you and you keep the videos coming... See you on the water.

Smart to wait a little closer too noon that time of year than hit it at 1st light, lol ... know that ramp all too well, you should put a plug in for him, after all w/o that launch (at least it's a launch) you'd be way further down, or up ... so where's that Hell Hole place in your other vid. I watched, you gonna tell me, please ?? ... glad you're not advertising that creek you passed, it gets too much stress already ... nice catch for 37 degree water ... oh, you asked about my favorite baits, used to be the 4" Yum Crawbug green pepper but they stopped making that size, 3-1/2" still available I think, and Shep would make me up some #3 Aglia w/yellow buck and gold blade ... Ken and Bobby taught me the tube my 1st time some 20 years ago, and how to play banjo on a snag, lol ...

The black and white intro looks nice with the snow! That had to be a chilly run first thing. Cool to see Joe's approach to smallmouth at different times of the year (see other linked video). Gotta feel good getting that first one of the season..and on a blade...couldn't believe it wasn't a dropshot. Glad you didn't bite that sucker btw
