A magnitude 3.9 earthquake rattled the East Bay on Monday. There were widespread reports of shaking but no reports of damage. KTVU Chief Meteorologist Bill Martin says the quake, with an epicenter near Castro Valley, was likely along the Hayward fault line.

I was in San Leandro and felt the earthquake jolt that shook the floor and knocked something off the shelf. Then I went to Ashland, which is right between San Leandro and Hayward. I sat there across from Ashland Avenue waiting for the bus.

The first jolt felt is a sharp side-on one, that’s the Primary, or P-wave. The next, the S-wave, follows, which is a more rolling, slightly gentler and longer-lasting. The length of time between them is a quick way to estimate one’s distance from the epicenter, the longer that delay is, the farther away you are from it. I felt the S-wave begin almost immediately, less than half a second, after the P-wave. Having lived in this house for 33 years, I can almost always correctly determine which fault zone it occurred in, the San Andreas to my West, or the Hayward-Rodgers Creek to my east, the movement comes from the different directions and makes slightly different noises.

I think that I'm prepared for an earthquake.
I have earthquake insurance along with renters insurance.
I also keep things on hand in case of an earthquake, can goods, water, batteries etc.
I also keep things in my trunk in case of an earthquake and have to leave my building.
I've been driving around with a bunch of items in the trunk of my small Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder for 2 1/2 years. Everything i would need to survive for a couple of weeks. Even a fishing rod. The other day I started to take everything out. I bet my case of water is stale tasting by now.
Maybe I better let things stay in my trunk.

These local “faults” are really multiple-fault zones, extending many miles in width, and many more length. They aren’t single cracks, they are regions in which multiple fractures and movement occur, often in places where previously no fault was observed, as in Loma Prieta. There is a risk to every location in the fault zone region. Reporters, you should refer to them as fault zones, please.

What time Monday did it occur, around 6:29 AM or PM?

I felt it at my home in San Rafael and reported it in the USGS site. As often happens, I was the only one to report from Marin. I worry about my creaky old house on Bay Mud, it shakes so readily. I would love to hear a report whether activity in this fault zone has been increasing, I’ve felt three already this year, that’s a lot more than usual.

Wow Earthquake in the Eastbay again.I wonder again.I moved from the California years ago, and now I am questioning myself, why are most Earthquakes in the Bay, mostly occur in June, September, and somehow in the beginning of the year.

We felt it at Union City, west of 880. It felt like an 18 wheeler truck rammed our house. We were on the second floor of the house and the whole house jolted hard but quick like a couple seconds that was it. We came out and checked on the outside of the house for any visible cracks happy not to see any.

Just so you know fox; the shaking in the great Alaskan quake back on the 60s actually lasted up to 5 minutes, not 48 seconds.

Your data is sub par! Title says 3.9 but you start the actual report with 4.1...do you people even know what you're talking about?

3.9 is nothing. +6.0 are the ones you need to be concerned about.
