NSAIDs help control both jaw pain and inflammation in the TMJ, such as ibuprofen (e.g., Advil). However, muscle relaxants are sometimes used to help relieve jaw pain and discomfort. They work by relaxing the muscles of the jaw and face and help decrease muscle spasms. Diazepam, also known as Valium, is a commonly used muscle relaxant. Tricyclic anti-depressants, such as amitriptyline (e.g., Elavil) help reduce muscle and soft issue strain of the jaw and face.
