I am originally Cuban, so my first language is Spanish. But I live in America now. If you speak Spanish, learning Italian is much easier than for most native English speakers. However, I was greatly surprised by how many English words have been added to Italian. i.e: weekend. So, if you can speak Spanish, and English learning Italian is a "piece of cake". This was really good, especially for a beginner. I just happened to come across it. I am fluent in Italian and English but English is my primary language because I live in America. I have 7 older brothers, I am the baby, and both of my parents are still here and counting nieces, nephews, children, spouses, grandkids, great-grandkids, aunts, uncles, grandparents, parents, cousins, and in-laws, when we get together as a family it's always in Italian. It's the only language my grandparents can speak fluently, they barely understand English so we do a lot of translation for them when someone doesn't know Italian. All of the inlaws are Italian, so when we are together the room is full of mostly Sicilians but when we did our 23 and me a few years ago, no one had a drop of anything but Italian blood. I am only third third-generation Italian American, my grandparents both came here through Ellis Island from Sicily and became legalized citizens in 1912 when they were 11 and 13. When we are together. it would scare an American away. It's loud, like a football game, with everyone talking over the other one, hands are waving, nails are clicking and heads are going all over the place when we try to make our point. There are over 300 of us in total right now. 316 to be exact. This is how I taught my kids Italian too. I have always just spoken both all my life.
