So you’re a beginner DJ and you’re eager to start learning and mixing ASAP! Which transition should you learn first?

Well, the most fundamental and important one - the Basic DJ Transition! Learning this transition will guide you on how to properly mix DJ friendly songs via their intros and outros! Once you learn this, you can always expand to learning how to mix via the chorus, etc.

So take your first step into DJing with this lesson :)

So step number 1 is to know what songs we have and their respective BPM.

BPM, stands for beats per minute, and you can think of it as the speed or tempo of the song.

So Song number 1 is at 120BPM, and song number 2 is at 124 BPM. And both these songs have intro’s and outros.

An intro is the first section in a DJ friendly song where beats just play, and an outro is the last section in a DJ friendly song where also beats just play

And so the plan is this;

We’re gonna mix the intro of the next song with the outdo of the current song. These songs are DJ friendly edits, meaning that their added intros and outros, were purposely made for this intention - to be mixed.

Now before we proceed to step number 2, let’s do 2 more things.

Number 1, Let’s first listen to both our songs.

And now let’s look at our setup and see what we’re going to use.

So we’re gonna use the play/pause buttons. These are in charge of playing each deck respectively.

Next we’re going to use the volume faders. These are in charge of the volume of each deck.

Next we’re gonna use the tempo faders. These adjust the BPM of both songs.

And finally we’re gonna use the cogwheels. These slightly temporarily affect the speed of the song.

Now, with that out of the way, let’s proceed to step 2.

So Step 2 is to play first song, and adjust the next songs BPM, as it plays

So in this part we’re going to use deck 2’s tempo fader.

Step number 3 now is to wait for the section we plan to mix in, and to play the next song once we reach that section.

Now, step number 4 is to make sure that the beats are aligned, and to adjust accordingly if they aren’t.

Just because both songs now are in the same bpm, does not mean, they’ll immediately sound perfect.

You’ll have to make sure that the beats align. And to verify that, you can either look at the screen and see for yourself, or use your ears and listen to both songs with your headphones.

But you’re human and not a robot, and we’re bound to make mistakes here and there,

so to correct any discrepancy when you cue the next track and aren’t aligned. Use the cogwheel.

So Either push it clockwise or counter clock wise, to adjust accordingly

So the final step now is to mix the next song in with the currently playing song.

So bring the volume fader of the next song up, and then slowly bring the volume fader of the currently playing song down. Once you do that, congratulations you’ve just successfully transitioned.

Now to make your transition sound even smoother, you can also adjust the EQ’s. I personally take out the LOW EQ of the currently playing song in combination with bringing its volume down.

This is how I like to mix to be honest. I'm a beginner dj and I don't like switching songs every 30 seconds, I prefer to stay smooth.
Thank you so much for these useful tips Dj Carlo :)

This is easily 100% the best tutorial video on how to transition I have watched so far and I have looked up and watched so many on YT. I love how you labelled each step clearly from 1-4 etc and the labels that keeps popping up. Made this video so much easier to understand unlike the other ones I have watched. Coming from a one month old DJ who has been struggling with transitions ! Hopefully this will make me master transitioning. Will update later. Thank you !!

I got into DJ'ing about four months ago. I watched this tutorial, and others you made, before and after I purchased my first controller. Last night, I DJ'd my first gig using this transition as my base. Mixed in with hours of practice, familiarizing myself with my music, and incorporating some things I picked up with trial-and-error, last night went better than expected, with potential doors opening.

Videos like this one help growing DJs like me. From one Pinoy to another, salamat po!

Im a semi professional House DJ/producer. This video explains the absolute easiest way to transition. In my head, there are 100 other things i rather do, than something simple like beat matching but it almost took me a awhile to learn what he just taught, bc i never had someone explain it so easily.

Thank you Carlo! I've purchased recently DDJ-400 and trying to learn some DJing basics. I've been looking at DJ performances and was curшous what all these DJs doing with EQs at song transition, now I finally recognize their sequence of actions as what you've explained in this video!
