This is a combination of poetry, music, scat, and social commentary. One of the reasons Dylan won the Nobel prize for literature.

1st rap song AND 1st music video!! Brought to you by the hippest dude on the planet for over 60 years...Bob Dylan!

The song is about all the ways the system, the man, and the power structures keep people down, and all the paranoia that comes about when you realize that you're the sucker getting played. There are just some brilliant lines in this song, my favorite being, "20 years of schooling and they put you on the day shift. Look out, kid, they keep it all hid." At the end of the video, the great beat poet, Allan Ginsberg, walks across the screen. While Bob Dylan might not be doing rap or inventing rap, he is definitely doing beat poetry with a lean into what rap would become.

“20 years of schoolin’ & they put you on the day shift”

One of the realest lines in all of music lol

I think the most famous line from this song is "you don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows, " which is more about social "winds" than actual ones.

This song is from one of the landmark albums in rock history, marking the first time Dylan went electric. It includes the classics:
"Maggie's Farm", "Mr. Tambourine Man, " "It's Alright Ma", "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", and "On The Road Again ". This album was a precursor to the greatest song in rock history: "Like A Rolling Stone.

This song is almost 60 years old. It was playing on a disc at my dentist's a week ago. I asked the young woman hygienist, maybe about 24 or so, if she knew who Bob Dylan was. "Everyone knows who Bob Dylan is", she replied.

you don’t need a weatherman

This song is all about metaphors. Vandals took the handles. Vandals-a group of ppl in ancient times who moved around a lot and ran afoul with both Rome and Carthage I believe. They didn't just pillage they broke stuff like rendering a lovely Roman jug useless by removing the handles. We get the word " Vandalism " from these guys.

" The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handle" refers to the pump handle at BARD University that was t was vandalized. There is also eluded to drug raids at Bard in the lyrics. Always a deeper meaning to Dylan than a cursory hearing offers.

INXS made a video for the song "Mediate" which pays homage to this video, as each member of the band flips cards with the lyrics on them, just as Dylan does here

This is from Bringing it all Back Home, his first Rock n Roll LP and one of the finest Rock albums of all time( along with Highway 61Revisited, Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks).

The beauty of poetry is that it's intended to generate visceral reactions - not have concrete meaning, but playing with your mood and psyche. In that vein, the guy milling around behind him talking to the man in the trench coast is the famous Beat poet Alan Ginsberg, whom Dylan revered.

Brad & Lex, you’ll love his “Positively 4th Street”!!!

Could be my favorite Dylan song! My favorite line, "The pump don't work because the vandals took the handle". John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles heard this and said, "How the hell are we supposed to compete with this".
