The number of banana growers in the Windward Islands of St Lucia, St Vincent, Dominica and Grenada is dwindling after a hurricane devastated crops in 2010. Simon Rawles hears how fair trade rules are helping remaining farmers recover from the disaster, despite global economic turmoil and a European decision to allow greater competition in the industry

 The Windward islands were the main if not sole supplier for bananas to British supermarkets until the US demanded in the EU courts that through 'fair trade' and free trade they had a slice of the pie. It's ironic that these growers are completely dependent on fair trade to keep them alive when it is fair trade that put them in this situation in the first place. Now that they have lost their banana trade St Vincent is  the regions largest producer of marijuana, another wonderful side effect of the global greed and destruction caused by the USA.
