A Sense of Beauty, Episode 8: You Never Know Until the Day Of

The Oscar de la Renta New York headquarters are booked day-to-night with fittings as samples arrive from Italy and the Atelier. With House Model Vik Kukandzina fitting every style, the months-long design process earns tangibility. Co-Creative Directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia’s work room becomes the Design team's hub as styles that did not meet expectations are challenged, altered and cancelled.

The crystal fern gown, which journeyed from idea to muslin in our New York headquarters, and from embroidery in India to tactical sewing in the NYC Atelier, finds final form. The fringe embroidery group receives mixed feedback. CEO Alex Bolen offers his thoughts on the woven leather program’s progress. Skirts are cut with a slit, hemlines shortened and some styles need no alterations ahead of the next day’s collection styling.

Too many cooks spoil the broth…an old proverb meaning: if too many people participate in a task, especially in a leading role, the task will not be done very well. I think there's too many designers involved. It kinda messes out when there's too many ideas for a really simple "brand aesthetic". The killed dress was indeed very Oscar de la Renta look. Fernando Garcia is enough for the brand. Laura Kim always disagrees.

It doesn’t feel like the brand has a direction anymore with all these pretty but forgettable clothes…too many opinions and right now it feels like the only brand identifier is the florals. The only interesting look (the short fringe dress) gets killed…it’s starting to look and feel like Carolina Herrera. It’s not a bad thing in itself, it’s just that IMO the brand could be so much more given its legacy.

The killed dress felt younger and modern. It did look a bit like a lampshade but in a fun way. I think this brand has too many cooks. The main designers seem weirdly dissatisfied with a lot of looks so who designed them?! It also doesn't look v cohesive as a result of too much input. Oh well.
