A lot of people do not know this, but the X Wing 75301 is the closest LEGO has been able to get the X Wing to be TRUE minifig scale (length wise). The 75301 needs to be about 1 centimeter shorter to be true minifig scale (length wise). 75301 is my favorite X Wing so far because of its dimensions. I also like that it does not use rubber bands. However, the set still has a few problems. This is unfortunate.

Been thinking about modifying my X wing as well. I bought the new set, which I like how the wings are technic built instead of bands. The engines are a bit small though.
