Rhino Peak - Gardens Castle, Drakensberg

On Monday, I travelled with Jonathan Tooke and Simon Krone to Gardens Castle, in the Drakensberg Mountain Range, to summit Rhino Peak, a round trip of around 18km and an at altitude of 3051m.
We left Pietermaritzburg at 4am, and began hiking with the sunrise, around 7am. We had a slow start, as Simon and I had bad low bloodsugars which we struggled to get up, but we soon got to a good pace. After crossing briefly into Lesotho, we reached the summit after about 5h30min, and stopped for lunch. After a comfy 45min or so lunch break, we headed back down the valley, arriving back at our car at 17:30, then heading back to Pietermaritzburg.
We were lucky to have had perfect weather throughout, making the hike a lot more manageable. Along our route, we passed large amounts of ice and snow, visible towards the top of Mashai Pass and along the shaded sides of neighboring mountains.
This was one of the more challenging hikes I've done, involving long uphill slogs and a significant increase in altitude, but it was extremely rewarding, with stunning views. As one of the only routes by which the Drakensberg's summit can be reached in a single day, I'd strongly recommend this for those with a decent fitness level.
