Larry Darrell (Bill Murray) returns from the battlefields of World War I to America a different person. His fiance Isabel (Catherine Hicks)) resigns herself to a delay in the wedding plans when Larry heads off to Paris. There he finds he prefers a simpler existence and begins to read. One book inspires him to visit India and on to Nepal where he finds spiritual help from a lama. On returning to Paris he finds Isabel and some old friends. Everyone has changed.

To match the epic, sprawling nature of the film, Jack Nitzsche wrote an equally epic, sprawling orchestral score, filled with emotional themes that seek to depict both Darrell’s search for enlightenment, and the grand scope of the journey he takes to find it. The main theme is simply stunning, a bittersweet, sweeping piece for strings that captures both the nostalgia of the setting, and the optimism of Larry’s character, a hopeful dreamer who needs meaning in his life.
