It was an expansion port for different add-ons

'Since your order got picked to be filmed, I'm throwing in this SNES exercise bike'

That port wasn’t just for an exercise bike - it was meant for other peripherals, too. The Super Famicom used it for the Satellaview, there were other things planned for it that didn’t get released or only were shown in test markets… To say that the port was specifically made for an exercise bike is not only silly, as that device wasn’t even a first-party device, it’s misleading.

Worth noting that the "phone cord port" is an rj-11, which is a generic standard for cabling. Different software/hardware uses it in different ways, phones just tend to be the most common way we see it as consumers.

Ethernet cables are the same way, they're an rj-45. Ethernet is just the protocol implemented in the cable to be used for internet

That sounds like a pretty good idea for a VR game you get on a stationary bicycle and then in the headset it looks like you're actually somewhere pedaling around.

The port on the underside of the Super Nintendo was supposedly going to be for a CD-based add-on that never came to be, as Nintendo and Sony broke their agreement.

It was used for more than that, in Japan they had a semi-online system that ran through satellite which hooked in to that port it’s called satellaview

I love that Nintendo tries to do funky shit with their consoles all the time. Helps seperate them from the competition and it’s actually fun and quirky.

It’s not just for that, it’s an expansion port in general. Other things like Satellaview in Japan (Whixh was done similarly and had it been imported) and the Sony CD add-on, the “Nintendo PlayStation” (If they didn’t cut ties), would’ve also been used for it as well. Most people never really noticed it in the US for many years though because, well, there weren’t many other expansions outside of this, if at all. *Duh.*

Yeah, I dunno about an exercise bike, but, if I recall correctly, it docks to the SNES diagnostic test station used by licensed repair facilities.

The sound of the telephone cable snapping in is nostalgic

That port always made me curious if any new retro hardware would be compatible with it similar to how folks have gotten extra utility out of other consoles lesser used ports like the Gamecube's Digital Out port. Neat info though, thanks for sharing.

There is also Nintendo - BS-X Satellaview

It's the expansion port for the Japanese-exclusive Satelliteview.

But if you want weird, look at the bottom of the NES.

The Super NES CD-ROM System, known as Super Famicom CD-ROM Adapter in Japan, is an unreleased video game peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The add-on built upon the functionality of the cartridge-based SNES by adding support for a CD-ROM-based format known as Super Disc.

That was like the very first internet device where players could connect and chat with each other.

It was going to be a port for a CD add on to the SNES before it wasn’t made, honestly I understand Sony was being a (choice word) with their copyrights but atleast you would’ve actually had a CD add on instead of Phillips failing to do anything.
