This is a bit of a full circle moment because this is the first clip of me that went viral after my stem cell transplant which saved my life. This song will always have a special place in my heart because of that.
Troubles so hard by Vera hall has always been a song that spoke to me more deeply than most.
It’s hard to explain to anyone what I went through and have them understand the horrors of existing in a body constantly at war with itself, the crushing defeat of pinning your hopes on endless treatments only for them to not work, or in some instances make you worse. Missing what were meant to be pivotal years of my life in bed.
Vera hall was born the daughter of a slave, and had to navigate a hostile 1940s America, something I will sympathise with but will never relate to.
The line ‘don’t nobody know my troubles but god’ is so simple, but so powerful to me, every time I sung it I felt it with every fibre of my being.
I really wanted to create a song using the original sample, and we finally got clearance to do so. I decided it would be a fitting musical backing to tell my story for the first time in song.
