Here is some context (for the people who don’t know): American Airlines flight 587, a Airbus A300-600 (registered as: N14053) was a scheduled flight from John F. Kennedy Airport, in the U.S. to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, before the plane lined up on runway 31L, there was a departing Boeing 747-400, operated by Japan Airlines, flight 47 (no registration was given) was a regular flight from JFK to Tokyo Narita, and it took off first, flight 587 was notified of wake-turbulence left by the Japan Air 747-400, and flight 587 left JFK at 9:13 AM Eastern Time, after a smooth takeoff, they were passed on to New York Departure, where they would have there last radar contact with flight 587, flying near by, American 686, a Boeing 757, contacted NY Departure notifying that there was a “tremendous amount of black smoke just south of Long Island” and NY Departure automatically assumed it was flight 587 and was correct.

On the ground, in Belle Harbor, Queens, everyone was waking up for work or still stunned from the aftermath of September 11, and the Airbus A300 crashed with it’s nose down without it’s vertical stabilizer, and everyone onboard was killed and 5 were killed on the ground. And a couple minutes later of it crashing, they found the tail near Black Well Channel and the cause of the crash was changed from a terrorist attack to a tail fracture.

I swear in 2016, I thought as a naive kid the world in 2024-2025 would have supersonic planes being a normality, 1000 meter tall skyscrapers in 30% of major cities. But in 2024 we’d be comparing plane crashes💀
