It is independence.. see Farida Jalal's character has phone. Courtesans were anything but prostitutes they were artist who lived outside social norms just like movie actresses today....They were custodian of art and culture. The closest comparison is Geisha. That is why in Tilismi Baahein song Aditi Rao looks horrified looking at Sonakshi Sinha's character doing cheap cabaret as custodian of culture, it was beyond their dignity to dress and act cheap. While some were involved in sex work most courtesans were mistress of high and mighty.
