Gurumurthy ji, why did you wait so long to enlighten us about the changes in the constitution regarding the 'Declaration Of Emergency'? This knowledge could have been invaluable in countering the opposition on social media during this crucial period. Nonetheless, as always, it's been a great learning experience.

With due respects, Mr. Gurumurthy, by saying those not hopeful of India’s ability to remain a democracy are scoffing at the Constitution and the SC, is actually scoffing at the very source from which the Constitution and the SC derive.

The source is the unifying human spirit in each of us and its unrelenting quality for recognizing and realizing a path taken as wrong in order to come back with absolutely no sense of ego on the path of ethics, morality, and righteousness.

I grew up in Emergency too. It was exactly like how Mr. Gurumurthy portrays it.

Even so, it’s unconscionable how people today refer to Emergency in order to contrast it with the happenings of today and prove how safe and secure it is today. Not so at all.

Former PM Indira ji did declare Emergency in 1975. Agree it was as bad or dark as Mr. Gurumurthy depicts it.

Yet it’s unconscionable how people talk about Emergency. As though some dictatorship befell us and we all had to fight a war against the dictatorship to bring back democracy.

Nonsense, except for the Emergency declared, none of the rest we imagine happened.

It’s a very sinister thing to plant images of that which never happened in people’s minds. Especially when half a century has passed by.

I am not a supporter of Indira ji or Congress. Never was either. Yet, the far more significant action of Indira ji (than her declaring Emergency) that js never talked about is that Indira ji also put an end to this Emergency herself. If Indira ji had not called off Emergency on her own, neither Mr. Gurumurthy, nor anybody else would be here today able to discuss matters as we do democratically. Nor any of the significant events that happened in our nation recently would ever have happened.

Let us just thank Lord Shri Ram and take the time slowly to understand and breathe in the realization of how much more significant Indira ji’s action of calling off Emergency on her own is for us today. Let us also take the time to realize the true nature of the human spirit in Indira ji, which gave her the strength and the ability to allow herself to become Shri Ram’s instrument and, in doing so, call off Emergency on her own. We wouldn’t be here today if Indira Ji hadn’t done what she did. So enough of Mr. Gurumurthy’s half truths.

A dictator is not someone who gives up a dictatorship ever. Did Saddam do it, or did Assad?

Indira ji herself called off Emergency, dissolved the Lok Sabha and called for fresh elections. That’s how democracy was able to continue. The constitutional amendment to ensure Emergency is never declared again unless there is an internal armed uprising, which Mr. Gurumurthy talks about, came much later. That too happened only because Indira ji called the Emergency off, dissolved the Lok Sabha and called for fresh elections. She was arrested in Oct 1977. After the Lok Sabha was dissolved.

Sorry. But none today by any yardstick would be able to hold a candle to Indira ji in the context of being democratic.

Afraid Mr. Gurumurthy and his ilk, by putting out half truths and focusing on unimportant parts of a story, are who they are and will be who they will be. It’s up to the people to decide whether they are able to let the human spirit in themselves rise and shine as much as it did in Indira ji.
