I'm pretty sure Tom is a manifestation of Tolkien himself in his own world. A presence undeniably there but not connected to the world, a presence older than time in middle earth but always has been, will be and is.

I think Tom was the of the same level of being as Ungoliant. Meta-beings, representing archtypal aspects of reality. She was the manifestation of the Void (non-existence), and Tom was the manifestation of Light (existence).

The funny thing is Tom Bombadil really IS older than Middle earth. Tolkien first wrote him in a poem he published in 1934, meaning he existed before Tolkien created the world where he would set the Lord of the rings, The Hobbit was only published 3 years after Tom Bombadil's first story.

Bro you have no idea the look of disgust on my face when I see random fans saying "Tom Bombadil didn't belong in the movie because he's lame anyways". And if you haven't heard this, yes, fans do say this. I didn't even know who Tom Bombadil was until I decided to read the main 4 books last year. He's by far one of my favorite characters. His whole mystery is intriguing.

Here's how I see it, having read just about most of Tolkien. In the Silmarillion, some spirits came to Arda before the Valar. Tom was the first, since he is "eldest". The evil and discord of the One Ring has it's uttermost source in Melkor. Tom was in Arda "before the dark lord came". So, Tom neither fears the One Ring, nor Sauron, nor any "darkness" because it has no hold on him. Therefore he dismisses it.

My thought is that if Sauron had ever moved against Bombadil he would have been without power against him. I look at Tom's interaction with the Ring. The Ring contained and was driven by the essence, power and nature of Sauron himself, since he had poured so much of himself into it when forging it. To all practical purposes the Ring was Sauron. Yet when Tom dealt with the Ring it had no power over him. It could not make him invisible, he could see Frodo when he wore the Ring, it could not tempt him or corrupt him. Such was the nature of Tom, and Tom was the Master of his land. If Sauron came I doubt his power could have overwhelmed Tom's authority in his own land. I think Tom was neither good nor evil; he just Is. Evil existed in his land - Old Willow comes to mind, plus when the trees in the past planted themselves against the High Hay until the Brandybucks cut some down. Tom could have stopped the attack by the trees just as he cast out the barrow wight and told willow to go to sleep, but did not choose to do so.
