"Sponsors want sustainable, fossil fuel free competition"

Sponsors have never been known for their competence or connection to reality.

Honestly, beyond the obvious monetary reasons, WTCR suffered from a dreadful track selection. Touring car racing is all about close racing, but you could see entire races at Pau or Vila Real without a single overtake. The European TCR series is way better at the moment with a schedule with tracks that provide good racing, and being free to watch on Youtube doesn't hurt.

Also the Electric series and its terrible race format is such a waste of the Giulia, one of the most beautiful touring cars in the last 20 years.

The thing is touring/saloon car racing is so different. The btcc, my favourite uses quite small cars and engines, the Aussie Supercar is a large v8 engine in a bigger car than the btcc, the Geman DTW cars now look more like racers than road cars. The famous American saloon formula NASCAR uses alcohol powered v8's. The race types are different in length and format, so there is very little common ground to work on. Lets keep it domestic to each nation as they all seem to be doing well in their homeland.

truthfully, i'm fine with tcr europe becoming the de facto "top" touring car championship. it races on way better tracks (although i'll certainly miss the nordschleife), costs a fraction of the price for running the exact same cars, and some of its more renown competitiors, like tom coronel, are wtcr regulars anyways. i mean, with tcr rapidly becoming the gt3 of touring car racing, it was a logical choice to "upgrade" tcr international to wtcr to replace the frightfully pricey (albeit incredibly sexy) tc1 era of the wtcc, now it's time to downscale again, and go back to where it started, with the "european touring car championship".

When I think the death of world Touring Car Championship. Makes me feel like I want to retire as a fan. Just like how I had to retire as a NASCAR fan. I'm always against corporate-Capital interests.
