Thousands of New York City nurses strike over pay, staffing

More than 7,000 nurses in New York City are striking after talks over pay and staffing between two hospitals and the New York State Nurses Association broke down. NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard has the story.

As a nurse with 30+ years of experience I can tell you that the problem of not enough staff has been a direct result of making healthcare a business. The current issues are the same issues as the ones since the 80s. Forty years of dysfunction in the entire healthcare industry. All related to the almighty dollar. I stand with the nurses in NYC.

It's not that they can't afford to hire more nurse. CEO takes private jets and helicopters, even to go to a restaurant, they do takes jets back home.

7 to 8 patients per nurse? That's ridiculous. Nurses are essential to any economy. Give them what they want "RIGHT NOW!" No worker should have to protest for anything in this country. It's time to pay up. Nurses should get a pay raise.

My daughter is an RN in Nashville. She worked in Colorado when the pandemic struck. No PPE, doctors got masks but only saw patients briefly. Now she is ready to quit because hospital CEOs make decisions that benefit bottom line such as cutting support staff while putting more patients on each nurse. She has seen it all and has no respect for CEOs who have multiple homes and take multiple vacations while the nurses and patients go without. We need to have a true public health system of care that puts patients first and gives support to our frontline ESSENTIAL workers, i.e., nurses, CNAs and the rest. We spend around one trillion dollars on the military budget that goes to profit the makers of weapons of mass destruction. Let's put billions into taking care of people and providing good, quality health care including preventive medicine and healthy food and environment that allow us to thrive.

Nurses risk alot . Including their life and they need to get paid for it. Hospitals are making billions and don't think the people that actually do the job should make much money

As an RN in CA, I 1000% stand behind them. Why CA is the only state with mandated nurse to patient ratios is beyond absurd. Get with the times & get onboard! Patient care should not have to suffer! And nor should nurses, obviously

I SUPPORT THE NURSES 100%. I have WITNESSED how OVER WORKED the nurses in this and other NYC Hospitals are due to understaffed and over worked. IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY STOOD UP FOR THEMSELVES!!!
