Are Gen Z lazy? It's the question on everyone's lips.

A video from a TikToker called lohannysant, has gone super viral, in which she struggles to find employment, while another video has also gone viral where a Gen Z'er cries about having to do a 9-5 work day.

Is there some grand conspiracy at play, or are Gen Z just experiencing the same punching down that Millenials did when they entered the workforce? All will be explored on this edition of Scroll Deep with Benedict Townsend.

When i worked 8-17 i would leave home at like 6:40 in the morning and get back at six in the evening and that is insane! Like how are you supposed to live?? That’s not being lazy, that’s just questioning a crazy system

I'm old gen Z, and just turned 27 last month. I don't think that gen Z people are any lazier than any generation before them, but in 1975, when a 22 year old Baby Boomer came home and cried about their work being really hard and overwhelming, there was no tiktok to post their reaction to. They just cried alone in their room. These days the lives of gen Z kids entering the workforce is so much more public than it used to be so people make these assumptions that they can't handle it because being born in a certain year just makes people lazy. I think though a lot of them just see the absolute BS that is corporate culture and feel like there's room for change and improvements so that work it's a soulless drudge that saps all the life out of their souls. Just let people work and leave when they've finished their days work, that's the bare minimum that most people would like. Forcing people to sit around boring offices for 40+ hours a week doing almost nothing isn't productive or useful to anyone. It just makes it easier to force people to do work that isn't in their job description.

I’m gen z, I started working full time at 17 and realised I hated the job completely by 21 (I was so stressed and unhappy to the point of crying every day) but when I would talk to my mum and auntie (gen x/millennial) they would tell me I’m being unrealistic and no one loves their job. Now I have a different job where I may work more hours and it’s more physically demanding but I do enjoy it and definitely don’t hate it. I was still told I was just being sensitive and lazy when I know I’m definitely not

I’m a young millennial (29) and I back Gen Z here. Working harder isn’t it. Working smarter is important and overworking and being exhausted isn’t going to help anyone, you can’t even be efficient when you’re exhausted. I think Gen Z are the same as young millennials.

Gen Z here, all my life I've been pretty hardworking and ambitious, grade-A student blah blah blah, very motivated to Get Out There And Go To Work. I got my first 9-6 at 19 and it completely drained the life out of me. I didn't expect to be happy everyday but I didn't think it would be so miserable. For something I was expected to do for the rest of my life I thought I would feel more okay doing it. Maybe it's just a matter of finding my passion, but with the job market being what it is... lol. I'm one of the lucky ones to have found employment at all.

I’m gen Z and in college and it’s exactly what you said. We already know ahead of time that there’s no way to sustain a living with the average pay nowadays and so we feel like it’s pointless to work so hard and so long if it’s not even going to be able to give us an affordable living.

I'm about to graduate college and everyone keeps asking me what I'm doing afterwards and it's like... are you insane? Have you seen the layoffs? Nobody is hiring when they're also laying off everyone they possibly can.

I'm 16 and this is my last week of school and I'm dreading being an adult so much cause I want to get a job but I'm terrified about being miserable but stuck in that job for the rest of my life

As a gen z-er myself I would love to work but no one wants to hire me because I have no experience, I’ve tried applying at my local college but didn’t get in. All I do everyday is be stuck in my room using internet and see constant doomer news I have no friends or family to really help me out and I legit just want to give up:(

I’m gen z. I work in retail on the weekends so I can study art during the week but just knowing I have to go to work at the end of the week fills me with such dread, and makes the weekdays go by so quickly. It’s not that my workplace is toxic or anything but it’s so far from what I want to be doing. Of course I do my work and don’t slack while I’m there but beyond the first hour of my shift every minute only serves to weaken my stamina while I strain to smile and be polite and conversational with every customer. I’ve looked for and applied to jobs in the industries I want to have a career in but they all specified a minimum experience and, having none, was rejected from all I applied for. I know I’m young and that careers don’t happen overnight, but I keep wondering for how much longer will I be stuck like this? Studios have said they want to hire locally, and that they want to keep young talent here, but that’s completely belied by their apparent reluctance to hire anyone without industry experience and/or training in the software they use. There certainly are unmotivated workers in my age group, but when you’re forced to work for low wages in a position you don’t particularly like how can you expect an exceptional work ethic from everyone?

I'm Gen Z, and the requirements I jump through for my job for a 2pm-11pm is sickening. I currently wish I had a 9-5 job, although I understand it's no better. I have zero time to do anything for myself, and sitting in the probation period is ridiculous to even get a chance to SWITCH schedules. I'm so drained, my time is so limited before and after work. I have to do everything right, or try to fit it in my off day. Not knowing if I should even do errands or give that time to myself on an off day makes me cry.

Literally everyone had this reaction when they first start working, but we didnt have social media to talk about it. Work is hard!
Edit; I'm a millennial.

As on the border of gen z/millennial and it is quite funny knowing people on either side of it

But we all share something in common and that’s not dying over a job that will replace us five seconds later

I am a lawyer - Gen Z - and I work twelve hours a day. It's super long hours and for the first two years decent pay but once I make associate it becomes worth it.

I’m gen z, and I feel like our generation isn’t lazier in general. Gen z does seem more pessimistic, but that’s how things are right now

My first few months of an office job, I was absolutely totalled. Get home, do my jog, eat dinner, go to sleep. It 100% is an adjustment that you have to build up the endurance for to get literally anything else done ever. Or maybe you just eventually accept that you won’t be getting anything else done ever 🤔

I shared this video so fast, because i was having this literal conversation with my therapist and mom. This such a relevant stressor in the work force, that we’re supposed to look past because we don’t have an option but to need money to live, he may talk fast and silly but he’s articulated. 🐀
