The Canon EOS M is a beast with the Magic Lantern firmware hack, but is the 5k RAW video mode worth using?

Actually, most cameras limitations are caused by software not hardware, shame

rolling shutter exists even in slow pans. I cannot stress how much rolling shutter happens here but this setup is for tripod or the steadiest hands only. You really have to need raw and in addition have a super low budget to accept the cons of this setup. A low cost 2K raw cinema camera is probably a better option for most of us

You don't stretch anamorphic, you squeeze it.. you don't gain magiz new pixels. They are just reading all the vertical pixels, and only part of the horizontal so they can read the sensor out faster... so its not 5k in any way.

Thanks for sharing those details. I made some calculations because I was curious to what is advertised as 5K. In fact the final video is not a 5k but a 1440x1810pixels= 2, 6 Mega pixels video which is streched (upscalled) to 5k. Still contrains only 2, 6Mpixels. A 5k video should normally contain 5120 × 2880 that equals around 14, 7 mega pixels. Still the video you get from eos m with ML is a bit better in resolution than 1080 which contains only 1080x1920= 2 mega pixels.
(And as someone said on a comment I believe that Topaz Enhance AI would do a better job in upscaling a 1080 video and you would not have to go over this trouble).
Very good effort though! Congrats!

Got this camera in 2014 for about $200 on sale. Maybe it's time to revisit it for fun, but it seems a bit of a hassle compared to just shooting on my Lumix g9!

I think the 20 fps thing might be fixed with software. I don't think is a big issue at the end. Good to know about this

I bought this camera in 2013. I like the stills from it, even now.

It's only really 1080p 12bit, you're just getting the maximum the sensor can put out. It's cool for a B cam but you'd still be better off with a Panasonic µ43 camera that can actually record 4K. The image quality and ISO latitude is roughly the same, but it's actual 4K. (or just use the camera in your pocket such as an iPhone 12 and up with a Beast Cage... Although you will have a lot more mush due to the small sensor size.

Would be nice to have support of magic lantern on canon 200d. The potential of sensor and processor itself is not used to the fullest. If done right it should be a bargain of the year.

Great review! The footage doesn't look anywhere close to 5k, IMO. I'm curious which setting is the most accurate in terms of resolution. From what I've seen, the sweet spot may be 2.5k

*EVERY MOVIE FOOTAGE FROM THIS CAMERA APPEARS TO BE BROWN-CENTRIC, AND VERY LITTLE DEPTH... ALSO HAS A HAZY QUALITY, LIKE I NEED TO PUT EYEDROPS IN*

I think the maths you meant is that one pixel gets used three times in the 5k aquivalent later. For example if I choose on purpose 16:9 aspect ratio than my resolution is 1280x2180 but 1280*3=3840 which is the resolution which comes out in the end.

I have also read that basically the 5k ana mode reads out more of the sensor itself than in the 2.5k/2.8k mode thus it should handle low light even just a bit better which at least would make totally sense to me combined with the higher fov/less crop I tend to go for the 5k anamorphic mode only with regular lenses. If you start to use an external monitor you cant use the low framerate overview of the 2.8k mode anymore. 2.5k mode is nice for c-mount lenses for example so you dont see any of the vignetting :) but otherwise I stay away from it

your video has a very soft look also the video captured by the eos is in some parts soft meaning less sharpness is this a luts you added or is this the look you get without any added stuff. Great content new sub!

Awesome video. Question. Can you do 4k and 24/60 ?

Do you have a promise filter on your lens? Your talking bits seem really cloudy.

You don't need mist filter for 5kFRPT- that mode removes muare. Use this filter just for 1080p.

it says 5k but it dont look 5k at all. everything looks soo mushy. the colours looks nice but it resolution looks worst than 1080p idk if it's the youtube compression or what.

the highest is 2.8k 12 bit. which is pretty good for 150 dollars. but can't do 5k. if your on a budget get this but if not get a sigma fp.
