They quickly worked out they were useless and concentrated on bombs. As early as November 1914 the RFC was using 12 different types of bomb. Such was the disconnect between pilots in the Field and Ordnance Officers at the War Office that an exasperated letter from France ordered the cancellation of the planned supply of 400, 000 more steel darts. Enthusiasm for such weapons from pilots had already drained away with experience. It required the RFC officer to tactfully point out that there was already 'a very large stock in hand and that stores are not being used'.
