BTW waterlogged stairs are blast proof. So you can have those nice quartz walls and have your protection too. Just arrange the stairs so the indent is on the inside of a tube block thick wall and waterlog all of them when you get to the top do an inverse stair upside down with the Gap in the center between the two and again waterlog the wall.

To make the portal trap even more evil.. go to the roof of the nether using ender pearls and make another portal directly over the one in the nether. Add set the trap portal. Then return and destroy the nether Portal. Now the overworld portal should link to the one on top of the nether with the trap
