Something to keep in mind is that gardening takes a LOT of patience... plants need to be checked once per real day, and it easily takes a week for a plant to mature. That is more then enough time to get the soils for the next planting 'season'...
And if you are worried about not being able to water them for a few days and thus cause them to wilt and die... just put the whole plot in storage :D It preserves the state as it was stored. Same thing works for flower vases inside.

May I add one small thing. Your retainers will not bring you the soil unless you have gathered it at least once yourself. A small point but I can see a new person getting tripped up by it. :)
