I make music because I can’t stop making music. I’ve tried and it’s boring and sad. Particularly sad because having the gift of creating music going to waste, is a sad thing to do

A good friend of mine that I'd known since we were just toddlers committed suicide on New years day in 2020. He sent me an email containing a video and a message. It was tremendously heartbreaking, but one of the things that has been running through my mind ever since has been the last little bit that he directed to me specifically. He said basically that I should take some risks and do what I love with the chances that I have, then said "love you bro". Still breaks my heart. I don't want to get too in detail here but it was a rough time for everyone who knew him obviously.

While learning to cope and manage stress I ended up learning transcendental meditation and I've been cutting out bullshit and focusing more on what I love ever since, getting back to the root of things. I'm kinda a decade later getting into music than I'd like to be, but I owe it to my friend. There is clarity that comes when you face death. If you're reading this and you're 20 and you're broke and you have no direction, just know that you matter and that if there's something that you love -not because of what others think or because of expectations, but something that truly gives you joy, then face your fears and give yourself a chance.

Edit: oh and I lost focus on why I was writing this comment. I just wanted to say that my motivation is exactly the same as yours. I kept having a vision of myself on my deathbed looking back at my life and I knew that if I didn't give what I love the best shot that I can, that would be the thing I would regret. I don't want to be that old man looking back in regret.

When I’m making music, it’s the one time in the day I get the chance to feel “flow”. and that I’m making something I genuinely like. The act of MAKING music is the reason I make music. The making is the end, not the means. How do I know this? Because I don’t give two shits how many people hear what I release (I do not promote my music as I can’t be arsed!). What I do worry about is if I lose this flow, which in the last 14 months I’ve been able to find consistently.

Ask yourself this: if your DAW could produce a complete track at the push of a single button, and it was completely unique and sounded amazing and that’s all you had to do (push a single button), would you be happy with this style of “making music”? I doubt it. It’s the struggle, the creativity, the discovery … that makes it worth doing.

Lowkey, asking "why do you wanna make music?" is like asking why I'm attracted by women. It's just what I love.

I’ve always loved music since I was 5. Didn’t have a desire to perform until the early 70s so I learned tenor saxophone to play in a big band someday. Well life had changes and I stopped playing but didn’t stop listening. I had a much better appreciation for what it took. In 2007 I decided enough was enough. I needed to play! Bought a guitar with one goal in mind. Learn a little fingerpicking and a few chords so I could amuse myself, no one else. My wife who was a good guitar player already said “bout time dude”. So we bought a few and started just having fun. Dream met! My wife passed away in 2018 and my doctor asked me one question: what do you enjoy doing the most. Answer: play music. Then do that! So now I play as often as possible, record, learned to mix to help me record better tracks, built out a home recording studio. I don’t have a desire to perform or release music, only play for my enjoyment. I have recorded a single and had other professionals add parts to it. It was a blast. My recordings will be for my kids and grandkids in hopes they will continue on their own musical journeys as they all play an instrument now. Life is short. Make more music while you can.

Your vids are are like therapy for me, touching all the sensitive subjects about me and my struggle of making music or not. Thanks, you help me on a level you have no idea of.

I make music because I'm passionate about it, because I feel sad and bored and simply not inspired enough to live my life when I'm unable to explore and experience music in a way that satisfies me. There are so few things that makes me feel like that in my life and, honestly, I think that none reaches the power that music making and sound in general has to me.

As a music lover, I got tired of buying stuff that I like, so I decided to start making my own. And my creations are tailored to my taste. The rest is all just icing on the cake. It’s also a lot healthier than droning out on Netflix and drinking the night away. Thanks for your existential questions!

someone once said "its smart to think about death from time to time, otherwise, if you dont, one day, when youre real old, and death is around the corner youre going to say to your self, , , , oh, oh ya, oh shiiiit"

I love making music, I dont like everything that comes with it such as selling it, selling a brand and feeling unsuccessful because I'm not making money off it. Stuck in a crappy day job that sucks the life out of Me.

Because music moves me more than any creative medium. It's been there for me during the darkest times in my life. Nothing compares to creating something that didn't exist before you breathed life into it. It's a drug I can't live without. It's the one thing I know I'm good at and even if I never make a dime from it or amass a huge following I'll never stop doing it.

I’m seeking music as an adventurer. My perspective started from 20th century blockbuster stage musicals as a teenager, progressed through musicianship and eventually standard broadcasting. I eventually traded for “kids” that handy syllable to represent decades of trying to build your dependents’ futures. Sure, it was my choice, and it was an investment. Now as a grandpa a few weeks ago I experienced my first granddaughter (who named me “Yata”) emerging from her nap, hearing my live ambient music stream and singing out then running up to the screen, watching my graphics then proclaiming “Yata Music!” That’s in a world where 2-yr olds have the panoply of online music to bathe in, and it feels like my biggest satisfaction in music. But lifting this little girl up on my arm because she asked me to, to enjoy her beautiful innocent personality, is far more important to me. Wide perspective is very hard to obtain and it takes a very long time. And this doesn’t supplant my satisfaction in my music. It’s not an either/or choice it’s a both/and combination. I’m grateful I didn’t succeed at chasing music and nothing else.

When you are actually faced with death (in my personal experience) you tend to look at all the things you did rather than what you didn’t. There isn’t a sense of regret for not having done but more one of gratitude for what you did. It’s a rather serene place rather than one of angst about what never occurred. Thank you for your interesting conversations.

I’m willing to be convinced otherwise, but I thoroughly believe this is the video all of your detractors will call to your attention when they wish to bash you again. It touches on so many philosophical and fundamental points that most people wish to ignore because of the patients required to climb the Mountain of abstracts, only to realize they must descend to a profoundness to reach resolution. In someway, shape or form, we’re all on a quest; The question has always been and will always be”Why Complete it?” Settling for answers that temporarily satisfy the psyche May achieve short-term success, but are an overall distortion of the greater picture. A lot of the videos on this channel are more about self than they are about making music, which truly is of the greatest importance, as it is essence which will determine one’s existence. Thanks for the video; hopefully we can all remember how necessary it is to step back from all of the fact gathering and instead focus on a concise answer concerning who we are, so that we can set about what to do and how to do it.

Holy shit! This was literally like listening to myself talk. Although I have never had to wrestle with the topic of what I must do in this life, I sure as shit reflect on my own mortality now that I’m 67. Music has been my whole life. I started playing trombone in the 3rd grade and continued through high school. When I was 13 I picked up guitar and have not stopped playing to this day. I have played guitar in almost every style and setting you can imagine. Music is really all I think about. When I started producing it was just another experience that involved music and I’ve spent thousands of hours learning it, and every day I can’t wait to get back at it. Sadly, some people never discover what they must do, to others it was never even a question. Funny how that works.

I am in my early 40's and started making music in when I was about 15 with an Amiga and Protracker. Why do I do it? I was really impressed back in the late 80's and 90's of hearing sampled sounds coming out of a computer and then discovered the incredible Amiga Demo Scene.. and I just wanted to be able to do what they did. Later on I got more serious about music making.. and learning and experimenting etc.. you all know the drill.. But fast forward to now.. Thinking about it. I am in competition with myself. Each song I finish, I am working towards impressing myself. It makes me happy. Back in the 90's and mid 2000's I thought it was about impressing my friends. You figure out that they actually dont care. or downplay it in a way that is "oh well if you can do that.. it must be something that anyone can do".. discarding all of the unseen time and effort and experience you have and the nuance of shaping sounds. Dont make music for your friends, they wont understand.. and its not their fault.. Make it for you. Impress yourself. (oh and BTW.. They started to notice.. once I began singing.. "Oh who's the singer" .. lol)

Exactly. It's a spiritual journey to find who we are and accomplishing something of value in this life. I believe we have chosen to be here to go through the dark to understand out spiritual nature and embrace the light. Find inspiration. Well done man!
