Is machine learning overrated? Yes. But probably because most people don't really understand what it is and what it's limitations are. I don't think Google has helped much, in this regard, with all the hype, much of it unrealistic, they've pushed for their own AI products - remember that 'demo' that showed Google Assistant booking a restaurant for you? That was in 2016 - five years later and it's still not surfaced.

Is it worth learning? Yes, but unless you genuinely want to specialize in it, it is sufficient to understand it more at a higher level, so that you can implement and/or integrate an AI solution into your application. And importantly to know whether it adds value to that application. Data science, is essentially a set of skills that differs from development, so unless you want to change profession, leave that to someone who specializes in it. Honestly, there's probably a glut of 'data scientists' out there at present - and far fewer developers who know how to actually implement a machine learning solution.

I wouldn't put ml/AI in my resume unless I get hands on experience on them. ML/AI is a trend. Definitely helps but do we really need it for every app/project. Not really.
