Star Wars Squadrons - Another Wasted Opportunity

Long story short: Squadrons is another wasted opportunity on the PC.

The Good: the game has superb audio & graphics, with near-perfect temporal anti-aliasing, realistic lighting & shadows and belieavable character models - all performing surprisingly well given the graphics load. Yes, it's a year since the game came out and it's been repeatedly patched, but many games take years (plural) to look and run this smoothly, if ever!

Finally, 14 years after Crysis came out (2007), we're back on track to realise the exciting potential of video games on PC! Not quite...

The Bad: Boring as batshit. Sorry, to be so blunt, but you can see in the video that literally a couple of minutes into the tutorial I got so bored I steered my TIE fighter into a cruiser and bounced off surfaces to make things more interesting. Trapped in first person view, in a claustrophobic cockpit, all of those amazing visuals I referred to above are totally wasted unless you're a niche flight sim fan. Otherwise, mouse & keyboard controls are tedious, making story mode a grind; while in online mode, where numerous human opponents have had up to a year to hone their skills and use proper joysticks etc., it's a frustrating waste of time, not to mention a total waste of a beautiful Star Wars-themed game engine.

Put these sort of graphics and atmosphere into an open world Star Wars FPS/RPG, and it would be bigger than Jesus. Put them into an artifically restricted online space combat sim, and you make baby Jesus (and me) cry. :(

"Put these sort of graphics and atmosphere into an open world Star Wars FPS/RPG" You might find Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to be a bit up your ally then. (may not be as open-world as you'd seem to be wishing from, from what I've read, but not fully linear either)

Don't know how Mouse and Keyboard friendly it is though, so fair warning.

The gameplay is actually solid, it can be very immersive just like the original xwing and tie fighter games. The thing that kills Squadrons for me is it being extremely politically correct.
