This movie is based on the magnum opus "Ponniyin Selvan" by the legendary writer Kalki Krishnamurthi written in 1954. Chola Empire is one of the biggest and longest reigned Empires in the world. The world's largest Navy belonged to Chola Empire. The name "Navy" itself derived from Tamil. Ponniyin Selvan (Ponni's son). Ponni is another name for Cauveri river.. He is Arulmozhi Varman aka Raja Raja Cholan who built the Brihadweshar Temple in Tanjore before 1000 years(built in 1009 AD and opened for the public in 1010, this Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and this Temple has no shadow even during the noon time). Adithya Karikala Cholan(Chiyaan Vikram) is the elder brother of Arulmozhi Varman(Jayam Ravi). Kundavai(Trisha) is the sister of them. Vanthiyathevan(Karthi) is the loyal friend of Adithya Karikalan. Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) is from Pandiya Dynasty who is the antagonist in this epic. She went there to destroy the Chola Empire.

This Novel has 5 Volumes =2032 pages. It has been converted into PS -1 and PS-2. Without compromising anything Respected Mr.Mani Ratnam directed this movie exactly as per the Author. Almost 30 years I have been waiting for this movie

don't compare bahubali with this movie dad. Telugu people are spreading so much hate because kollywood came out with a historical movie that has bahubali touch to it. They don't realise that ps-1 inspired many scenes in bahubali. I didn't expect that telugu people will be like this

Chola kings fought on elephants in the battlefield, not on horses ., ..

Mani Ratnam is famed for using practical sets and props quite innovatively and I really hope he brings that skill into this. His previous movies' cgi handling was lacking imo but perhaps it was budget constraints too, so I really hope here he blends it well with his practical work.

I am sure he is gonna do the characters and story justice considering its been his highest passion since his beginnings and I cannot wait to hear Rahman's story-telling composition that he can do when allowed ala Bombay and Kannathil Muthamittal, one of my two favorite Rahman OSTs yet as much as its songs.

You're right, dear Den Daddy, in saying move over Hollywood, it's time for this cholan tamil epic to shine this year. 💕💕

It was written by Kalki Krishnamoorthy, .... imaginative story mixed with some real events and historical real characters, ...
Nandini character is imaginative .

Hi Den, Actually this 'Ponniyin Selvan' film was based on a true story novel written 'Kalki', about 'Chola Dynasty' who ruled in South and Southeastern Tamil Nadu who built great monuments still now existing in Tamil Nadu like great 'Tanjore temple' and 'Kallanai Dam', etc..

Please don't compare this film with 'Baahubali', because it is other genre, and 'Ponniyin Selvan' is an another genre.

This 'Ponniyin Selvan' was a Novel written in 5 parts written by 'Kalki', and actually tried to film this novel for the past 25 years in Tamil industry, and now 'Mani Ratnam' sir finally made hardly into 2 parts as 'Ponniyin Selvam 1' and 'Ponniyin Selvan 2'.

Actually, both Parts of the film's shoot was completed, and Part - 1 is releasing in September, 30th, 2022 and the editing works are going for Part - 2.
