Your trouble distinguishing between the two Martha's brought a smile to my face. Two of my mother's brothers (Linard and Alton) each married women with the exact same first and middle names (Betty Jean). While this could have contributed to a great deal of confusion and frustration for letter carriers and genealogists, the two couples thankfully lived in different states throughout their respective marriages. Within the extended family, these women were always referred to as "Linard's Betty" and/or "Alton's Betty." I don't know how they felt about being spoken about as if they were their husbands' property, but the rest of us found it useful when discussing them.

In the past, people married young people (today it would be pedophilia) and in the absence of leisure options, they had a lot of sex and consequently many children. They died early and married several times in their lives.
