We went there on a visit to Ireland. There were only two other patrons at the time and they ended up being from our hometown!

Where I live in Spokane Washington the oldest restaurant/ bar is 90ish years old. We have a boot company still running that's older than the state. Other than petroglyphs there's nothing from 1000+ years ago around here. Thinking of all the reasons why is both beautiful and sad.

Seeing this puts all of it into perspective: just what a big shit show the world is, and how rare and special a 1100 year old bar is. Much love.

In all towns and cities in Ireland, there are old castles or churches, and the community gets built up around them with forts from hundreds of years ago.
Not Athlone! Athlone is built up around this pub. Hundreds of years of communities evolving and expanding around this pub.

Well, I've been living in Ireland for about 24 years - in fact nearly every Pub you'll ever visit claims to be the "oldest Pub in: A: Village, B) Town C) City D) Ireland" I wish I was joking ;)

It’s in Athlone, county Roscommon because the pub is situated west of the river Shannon in Athlone town. The river Shannon is also the border between counties Roscommon and Westmeath.

Looks like - Identically - and most likely is - the very pub that was featured in John Wayne's movie, "The Quiet Man", which was entirely filmed in Ireland and used the local people extensively in it as well as a local village.
