Athletes have long been experimenting with supplements to boost their performance. A popular, yet rarely discussed supplement comes from an unlikely root vegetable. Beetroot.

The juice from beets are packed with nitrates, that some scientists and nutritionists believe could help an athlete win their next competition. Can beetroot juice be the key to making us stronger and faster?

Really well done video -- solid, logical and believable information with no hype -- down-to-earth and plausible explanations!

This was an excellent little report that came on randomly on my playlist. Makes perfect sense that maybe not as effective on endurance athletes bc they are already well conditioned. But for someone like me who merely commutes by bicycle and skateboards on the weekend, it may have a strong effect

If Beetroot is so beneficial then it should be consumed raw or with minimum processing & cooking, also the juice should be taken from Raw Beetroots rather than cooked or boiled ones as it will be quite wasteful as nutrients are destroyed.

Incredibly informative video. The majority of the videos when searching for beetroot effects are sales pitches, filled with super vague claims and buzzwords.

I think there was a study that showed beet root juice before a graduate exam increased the person's cognitive ability in a small but significant way. Sorry, I can't remember who did the study but it's out there.

I am 55. This must be the reason why i do not feel tired playing 3 games in basketball. I know nothing about this but i just took beet. Including it in my smoothies.

Organic cold-processed beetroot powder may be better than juice. Juice often has little or no fiber. I've recently started supplementing with organic cold-processed beetroot powder and noticed a difference in alertness and energy after about thirty minutes. This is rare with supplements in my experience.

I appreciate the science-based, evidence-based presentation here. When dealing with supplements, so much of what I listen to is complete garbage and sensationalism rather than honest, sober interpretation of data, including an honest assessment of the quality of evidence. This is the kind of thing that lives up to the BBC's reputation, unlike some other aspects of your on-air content. More like this please.

I want more details about the studies. The number of participants, their gender & age, was it a double blind study? Anything else is just antidotal stories.
