Doctor Anthony S. Fauci, the is an infectious disease expert who became the face of the US’ science-backed COVID response as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, says he will retire by January 2025. He said he didn’t intend to make a big announcement, but merely agreed that he will be leaving by the end of Biden’s first term as president. Fauci has added that although he will be leaving government, he will not completely retire from working in public health. He said, “I'm going to continue working because I still have a lot of energy and passion about public health, and global public health.”
Fauci has worked for the government for more than 50 years. He has been the director of the NIAID since 1984, and has been the advisor to seven presidents. Fauci has not only worked through the HIV/AIDS crisis, but has played a large role during the COVID-19 pandemic as well.
