It wasn't amazing at all and if goalkeepers stood in the centre of the goal instead of showing 2 thirds of the goal to the free kick taker less free kicks would be scored. As an ex keeper I worked this out in the late 70s when free kick experts learnt to put the ball over or around the wall with pace. That was 40 years ago and goalkeepers and their coaches still haven't sussed it out. Nor how to hold onto the ball like we did in the past often without gloves. The gloves of today are practically useless, especially on the palm areas.
