The N development HQ is in Namyang, Korea. Hyundai also has had a development center at the Nurburgring since 2011. Opening their new European Test Center in 2013. Biermann has stated that their N cars are tuned for driver enjoyment and involvement and not just numbers. Numbers as in 0-60, 1/4 mile, Nurburgring lap time, etc...
I believe he said they could easily tune their cars for just numbers, but that it would compromise comfort, daily drivability, etc...
Genesis/Hyundai/Kia are winning awards and accolades left and right. Kia Stinger won 2018 Auto Guide car of the year, Genesis G70 won Motor Trend car of the year 2019, North American car of the year 2019, and Auto Guide car of the year 2019, Hyundai Kona/Kona EV just won North American utility vehicle of the year 2019, Genesis/Hyundai/Kia just did a podium sweep (I believe first ever podium sweep by 1 manufacturer) of J D Powers initial quality rankings 2018, and The Korean trio also dominate the IIHS’s Top Safety + rankings for the safest cars on the road. And Hyundai/Kia have been quietly winning races and championships in everything from ice racing, Grand Am, to the pirelli world challenge TCR championships (both manufacturer and team championships). In 2010 when Kia started racing at Daytona many people laughed at them. By 2011 they had won the team championship. Nobody laughs at them now. Hyundai/Kia has won manufacturer/team/driver championships in multiple series and multiple classes. Hyundai/Kia are aware of the haters who point to the cheap but crappy Mitsubishi based Hyundai Excel (1st Hyundai car sold in the US) from the mid 80s. But they are not letting that get in the way of their pursuit of high quality products and respect. Unlike some incompetent and arrogant manufacturers who don’t learn and improve, Genesis/Hyundai/Kia is eager to learn and eager to make improvements to their products. The Korean trio are smart, patient, and humble and will probably enter bigger racing series once they have enough championships and experience. I do not yet own a Genesis/Hyundai/Kia product, but I have had apple products, such as iPhones, for many years. Samsung, LG, and Hynix (Another Korean trio, but unrelated) have been apple iPhone’s top 3 parts supplier for all the important parts for over 10 yrs. I have great respect for the Koreans and am impatiently waiting for a Santa Fe N or a Tucson N to park next to my 2 mercedes. I love the i30N, but we don’t get that in the wagon hatin’ USA. The Veloster N is great, but too flashy and funky looking for an old geezer like myself.

I've got the hatchback. It's been great for the 3 months I've owned it so far. I came from a 2 series and haven't really noticed a downgrade in quality at all, in fact the Hyundai i30N has more spec than my 2 series. Excellent car and great fun!
